This Wednesday we are going to be watching a documentary called Lonnie Frisbee: The Life and Death of Hippie Preacher. Lonnie was a hippie preacher of the sixties who's charisma kick-started two major Christian denominations (Calvary Chapel and the Vineyard) as well as other small movements. He had a conversion experience and saw a vision of Jesus while tripping on acid, and his vision was soon realized by the hundreds of hippie kids that would flock to him to be baptized. Later, Lonnie would be all but written out of the histories of the churches he helped start because of his sexual orientation.
The film captures the uniqueness of Lonnie and his following by highlighting the aspects of his life that were all but usual. Lonnie's charisma and pentecostal backround led him to see visions, speak in tongues, be slain in the spirit, and experience phenomenons that us Presbyterians are not used to ; )
This week at Theology on Tap. we are going to explore the theological aspects of these things.
See you there!
